Pro Verbs 3:1-12

First part of Chapter 3:

My child, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments,
for they will provide a long and full life,
and they will add well-being to you.
Do not let truth and mercy leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will find favor and good understanding,
in the sight of God and people.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own understanding.
Acknowledge him in all your ways,
and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own estimation;
fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
This will bring healing to your body,
and refreshment to your inner self.
Honor the Lord from your wealth
and from the first fruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled completely,
and your vats will overflow with new wine.
My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord,
and do not loathe his rebuke.
For the Lord disciplines those he loves,
just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.

What are your answers to the 3 questions?

  1. What happened in the text?
  2. What do I learn about God?
  3. What should I do about it?

Here are my answers:

  1. What happened in the text?
    Commends these teaching for enhancing life. Commends trusting God and His ways and wisdom. Commends honoring God through giving and acceptance of His discipline.
  2. What do I learn about God?
  3. He wants people to show truth and mercy.
    He straightens the way for those who follow and rely on Him.
    Fearing Him turns people away from evil and brings healing.
    He wants “first fruits.”
    He disciplines those He loves.
  4. What should I do about it?
    “Write them on the tablet of your heart.” One thing I’ve noticed recentl is that while my general Bible knowledge remains, that I’m having more trouble recalling specific verses, and more trouble remembering the flow of books I thought I were still very familiar. So I think I’ll add some memory verses to this exercise.

Verse to Remember:

Proverbs 3:3 – Do not let truth and mercy leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

Today’s section could have been split further and each individual teaching handled separately, but I”d like to get through Proverbs before next June.
