So suddenly my evening became unpleasant. No sound from the Shuffle = no Anthony Trollope, mid-book.

Other symptom: the status light alternating green and orange – three times each.

Some searching the web and fiddling resolved the issue:

1. Connect the Shuffle to the PC
2. In iTunes, select Edit –> Preferences –> “ipod” tab
3. Check the box “enable disk use”
4. Move the slider to the right so that it is set to maximum data, and 0 songs
5. Click Ok
6. Right click Start button and select “Explore”
7. Navigate to My Computer, and find the Shuffle’s drive letter
8. Right click that drive letter and select Format
9. Default options are fine
10. Click Start
11. After formatting, eject the Shuffle in iTunes
12. Disconnect the Shuffle
13. Reconnect the Shuffle

…and now we’re cooking with gas again, in this case, The Way We Live Now.

An annoying experience that makes me glad once again for the information on the internet.
